Chapter 16

The next few moments went by in a busy blur. Katherine made a point to step aside so she wouldn’t be in the way, hanging out in the doorway and watching it all unfold. So much was going on that it was almost impossible to keep up with all of it. First, both of the techs were doing everything they could to get the audio up and running again. They even had Clarendon on a large satellite phone, trying to dredge up anyone among their scattered and thinned-out forces that could lend a hand. Meanwhile, the screens showed the three surviving members of the Seal team during the aftermath of the shootout. Because the signal was steal very weak, the visuals came in jerking, static-laced flickers that were painful to watch.

The compound still featured on the screen appeared to be cleared of all threats. Katherine counted five bodies on the ground, none of which were the fallen Seals. They had seated Usman Agha against a crooked back wall where he sat like a reprimanded child. To Agha’s right, one of the soldiers was tending to the woman they’d had to shoot in the leg. She appeared to be screaming, but with no audio on the feed, it did not reach their ears. The entire compound was cast in a strange yellow glow that emanated from a small, contained fire in the center of the little structure and a few small light sources coming off the team.

Lastly, President Newsom was doing his best to connect with someone on one of two separate phones. Neither was a standard cell or landline. One looked very much like one of the satellite phones she’d seen in a military convoy while making her way from Richmond to Kettle’s cabin. Newsom spoke into one for a while, but it was a brief and agitated conversation.

As Katherine watched all of this, Clarendon also stepped just out of the room to stand beside her. Terrence remained inside, his eyes locked on the large screen.

“This is a very big deal,” Clarendon said. “With Agha being so closely linked to Raymond Vick, he’s almost guaranteed to have some information about Chaos Dawn. This is likely what he’d been concocting the entire time he was in hiding.” He shook his head and let out a thin sigh. “More than twenty years putting this all together. The man is certainly dedicated, if nothing else.

“Who are the technicians and the President trying to contact?” she asked. “Someone mentioned Langley earlier, when we were given instruction on inserting the coordinates into your system. Are Langley and DC still operational?”

“Yes. You should know this better than anyone. Everything beyond the barricade where I met you and Terrence is locked down with excessive force. DC and the immediately surrounding area are under such a high level of protection that it’s pretty much guaranteed to not be touched. Underground bunkers and tunnels are being utilized to run operations as well as we can. There are even two back-up systems in place in the event something does manage to get in from the air.
